First performance of symphonic fairy tale for children, Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev took place on 2 May 1936 at a concert at the Moscow Philharmonic. The author himself was conducting there. In three days, it was performed once again — on stage of Central Children’s Theatre. “The fairy tale surprisingly well synched with children — recalled wife of the composer Lina Llubera-Prokofieva — We went with all our family, our sons, twelve and seven years respectively, and they were completely thrilled”. This time, together with Prokofiev who was a conductor, Natalia Sats, creator and director of the Central Children’s Theatre was a narrator for this performance.
She was the one who suggested the main theme for the performance: it was supposed to be story where music instruments are introduced to children. It will teach them to distinguish different timbres and listen to symphonic orchestra. “Let our fairy tale have both wicked and kind, tough and light, grumpy and joyful ones — young people need to comprehend the stark contrasts so it would be easier for them to perceive different expressive music modes” — responded the composer.
Premiered at the Boris Pokrovsky Musical Theatre on December 3, 1999.
Revival premiere — December 3, 2016.
In Honor of the 125th Anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev.

The story is about a boy named Peter who lives at his grandfather’s house. The grandfather does not want Peter going out of their garden because there are wolves around. One day Peter goes out, leaving the garden gate open, and the duck that lives in the yard takes the opportunity to go swimming in a pond nearby. The duck is arguing with a little bird. Peter sees a cat approaching and warns the little bird who flies up into a tree.
