Lady of the Camellias live A legendary story sentimental and full of dramatic tension; marvelous music by Chopin whose own tragic fate, lends an additional melancholy ‘note’ to the ‘narrative’; a flashback of a ball holding its own amidst the numerous balls envisaged in the plot – this is virtually a movie on stage - and, for all the inventive dramaturgy, an absolutely intelligible ‘exposition’; exquisite costumes and elegant scenography, terse, but providing accurate details of social life and age; secondary characters delineated in full and fantastically beautiful duets of the main heroes, full now of tenderness, now of fury and passion…

The numerous merits of John Neumeier’s ballet have ensured it a long and successful performance life. On November 4 our ‘Lady’ turned thirty seven and she is just as beautiful and desirable as ever. This is a ballet loved by ballerinas, theatre companies and audiences alike. In the West it has been performed by virtually all the leading ballet companies. And its Russian première took place at the Bolshoi Theatre a year ago last spring.

‘The Lady’s’ debut at the Bolshoi was marked by the birth of a remarkable duet – that of our prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova partnered by the John Neumeier Hamburg Ballet principal Edvin Revazov. On December 6th, this duet will be seen on movie screens worldwide.
