Bolshoi Ballet in Cinema: LA FILLE DU PHARAON

Cast (the day of recording)

SCHEDULE

“Among the Bolshoi Ballet’s greatest successes in modern times, ‘La Fille du Pharaon’ (‘The Pharaoh’s Daughter’) is anything but modern.

Choreographed virtually from scratch in 2000 by Pierre Lacotte, ‘La Fille du Pharaon’ is a throwback recreating Marius Petipa’s lost Romantic fantasy of 1862. This splendid production is now being broadcast in HD by ‘Ballet in Cinema.’

Advocating a woman’s freedom to love whom she pleases, its message comes embedded in a supernatural adventure. Taking refuge in an Egyptian pyramid where he falls into a trance, the British explorer Lord Wilson is visited by princess Aspicia, who rises from the dust of her tomb a youthful and elastic beauty. Wilson exchanges his pith helmet and uniform for much breezier attire, being transformed into Aspicia’s consort, Ta-Hor.

Ballet in Cinema’s latest release places audiences in the center of the action, the better to admire Svetlana Zakharova, one of today’s great ballerinas. We sense the fluidity of Zakharova’s arms and spine from the moment when Aspicia stands over the explorer’s sleeping body, her gentle, wafting gesture bidding him arise as Ta-Hor.

She will remain fresh through a dazzling series of dance variations and costume changes, her feet marvelously stretched in intricate, small steps and her line majestically expansive in supported pas de deux”.
