
Biography
Maria Bengtsson studied at the University of Music in Freiburg. From 2000 to 2002 she was ensemble-member of the Volksoper in Vienna, from 2001 to 2007 ensemble-member at the Komische Oper in Berlin, where she sang leading roles under Kirill Petrenko in many of his most important productions. Since 2007 the artist is working freelance.
Maria Bengtsson sang in 2008/09 for the first time at the Frankfurt Opera. In the 2009/10 season she made her debutes at Covent Garden in London, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, at the Opéra National de Bordeaux and with the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. Apart from that, she returned to the Frankfurt Opera with her role debut in the title role of Richard Strauss’ Daphne. Subsequently, for the first time Maria Bengtsson performed at the Cologne Opera in a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni in the role of Donna Elvira.
In the season 2010/11 Maria Bengtsson sang the part of Fiordiligi of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte again at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Opera National de Lyon, where she also was heard as Donna Anna. In a new production of Bernstein’s Candide at the Berlin State Opera, she celebrated another role debut as Cunegonde. That same season, the artist made her debut at the Salzburg Festival.
The Swedish singer also performs regularly on the concert stage and at recitals; amongst others at the Carinthinische Sommer Festival, the Berliner Festspiele, the Wiener Konzerthaus, Musikverein in Vienna, at the Klangbogen Festival Wien, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Teatro Nacional Sao Carlo in Lisbon and at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt.
In the season 2011/12 she sang at the Teatro La Fenice and also celebrated her role debut in the title role of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Cologne Opera, where she appears again as Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in the current season.
