Biography

Former dancer Joop Stokvis studied costume design at the academy of costume design in Amsterdam and became resident costume designer for the Nederlands Dans Theater in 1963. In this function he later transferred to Scapino Ballet in Rotterdam and then to Het Nationale Ballet. Since 1990 he has been a freelance costume designer, working among others for Les grands ballets canadiens de Montreal, Ballet du Capitol in Toulouse, the ballet of the Komische Oper in Berlin, the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm and the Royal Ballet of Flanders with choreograpers such as Alvin Ailey (including Knoxville Summer of 1915), George Balanchine, Glen Tetley, Nils Christe, Hans van Manen (including Trois Gnossiennes), Benjamin Millepied, Jiri Kylian (including Transfigured Night and Symphony of Psalms) and others.
