Born in Germany, he studied at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, and at the Slade and won the Linbury Prize in 2001.

Costume designs include Wayne McGregor’s Live Fire Exercise, Limen, Infra and Chroma (Royal Ballet), McGregor’s Anatomie de la Sensation (Paris Opera Ballet), DYAD (Australian Ballet) and Outlier (New York City Ballet), The Kitchen, Dido Queen of Carthage and The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other (National Theatre), All About My Mother (Old Vic), La Cenerentola (Glyndebourne Festival and Deutsche Oper Berlin), King Roger (Mainz), The Messiah (English National Opera), Un ballo in maschera and Adriana Lecouvreur (Freiburg), Rigoletto (Hanover), Die Zauberflöte (Lucerne), Macbeth (Konzert Theater Bern), Beatrice et Benedict (Theater an der Wien), Les Troyens and Aida (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). Other work includes costumes and co-set designs for Thomas Adès’s The Tempest (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden).
Last year, he designed the costumes for the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony.
