Biography

Spanish conductor Jesus Lopez Cobos is one the most famous conductors , either in concert or for operas.
Maestro Lopez Cobos conducts the major orchestras throughout the world.In America: New York's Mostly Mozart Symphony, orchestras of New-York, Cleveland, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle, New York Philharmonic .And also many European orchestras Parma, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, - Orchestre National de France, Orchestras in Bordeaux, Lyon, Lille, Monte-Carlo, Strasbourg, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris Madrid, Séville, La Coruña, Santander Festival, Barcelona, Tenerife Gulbenkian orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, in Germany, Eastern Europe , Scandinavia (Malmö, Stavanger, Odense), Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen, Salzburger Festpiele,: Rotterdam Phiharmonic Orchestra, Seoul and Tokyio Philharmonic Orchestras etc.

He was principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic (1981-86) and was music director of the Spanish National Orchestra (1984-1988). From 1986 to 1998 Maestro Lopez Cobos was the Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
He was appointed Permanent Conductor of the Orchestre Français des Jeunes in Paris from 1998 to 2000.

As general music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin 1981-90, Maestro Lopez Cobos conducted 30 new productions at the Berlin Opera, including a 1987 performance of The Ring in Japan, the first time Wagner's four-opera cycle had been performed here. He has also conducted new opera productions at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden and the Vienna Opera.

From 2003 to 2010 Mo Lopez Cobos had been appointed as Musical director of the Teatro Real in Madrid where he did many productions as Italiena in Algeri, Fliegender Holländer, Salomé, Simon Boccanegra, Ballo in Maschera, Trittico, Rosenkavalier, Tannhauser, etc He also appears at the Liceu in Barcelona, the Chicago Lyric Opera, New York Metropolitan Opera (Thaïs) , Covent Garden in London, Capitole Toulouse,( Barbiere di Seviglia)and Opéra de Paris (Manon, Carmen, Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Traviata), Traviata in Zurich, I Puritani at the Grand Theatre Geneva.
He is conducting les Contes d’Hoffmann, Manon , Nabucco , Cenerentola, Ballo in Maschera at the Vienna State Opera , Turandot , Gioconda at the deutsche Oper Berlin, Manon at the Capitole Toulouse, Elisir d ‘Amore and Manon in Lausanne …

A native of Spain, Mo Lopez Cobos is German Citizen. He studied at the University of Granada and Madrid, where he earned a doctorate in Philosophy. He had received one formal musical training when he began conducting with Franco Ferrara in Italy and later with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna. He took first prize in the 1968 Besançon Competition, and in 1980 made his European orchestral debut at the Prague Festival and hid operatic debut in Venice. In North America he made his operatic debut with the San Francisco Opera in 1972 and his orchestral debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1978.

He was the first recipient of the Prince of the Asturias Award (1981), given by the Spanish government and the Royal House for outstanding contributions to the arts. He received the distinguished Service Medal First Class (1989) from the German government for his contributions to musical culture. In 1996, the UC College-Conservatory of Music awarded him an Honorary Doctorate.
