Biography

Michael Kupfer was born in Ravensburg/Germany. After his first singing lessons at the “Städtischen Musikschule” and after qualifying as a haulage businessman, he began his singing studies in at the “Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst ’Mozarteum’” in Salzburg, with KS Wilma Lipp. After that he got lessons from Prof. Hanno Blaschke, Astrid Varnay and Prof. Carol Richardson. At the moment he is in a “musical alliance” with Prof. Konrad Jarnot.

He became a member of the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State opera in Munich in 1995. His first permanent job he received in the Koblenz City Theatre. After that he was engaged at the Bremerhaven City Theatre, from 2006 till summer 2011 he was member in the joint theatres of Krefeld and Monchengladbach.

Kupfer has won many national and international prizes. He won the First Prize in the “Jugend Musiziert” competition, a stipendary at the Meistersängerwettbewerb Nürnberg e.V. 1993, and a further stipendary in the same year at the international singing competition “Neue Stimmen” in Gütersloh. He won further stipendaries from the Karl Erb Foundation (1992), from the Friends of the Bavarian Stateopera Munich (1995) and from the Richard Wagner Foundation in Koblenz (1998).

His roles include : Graf Almaviva, Tzar Peter I., Graf von Eberbach, Fürst Ottokar und Kilian, Harlekin, Papageno, Doktor Malatesta , Morales, Dr. Falke, Gabriel von Eisenstein, Danilo, Leader , Guglielmo, Marullo, Lelio Down, Mydas, Danilo, Sharpless, Silvio, Ping, Posa, Herr Fluth, Pelléas, Donner, Gunther, Kurwenal, Klingsor, Enrico Ashton, Jelezki, Belcore, NickShadow, Faninal, Heerufer and many more. He is equally at home on the Concert Hall stage, where his performances have included The Four Seasons, The Creation, The St. John and the St. Matthias Passions (both Bach), Beethovens 9th Symphony, Brahms Requiem, Elias and Paulus. He also appears as Liedersinger with the big cycles like Winterreise, Die schöne Müllerin and Dichterliebe in Japan, Italy, Germany and Austria.

Since 2000 he has been a regular performer at the “Tiroler Festspiele Erl”. Here he sang Eisenstein in “Die Fledermaus”, Donner and Gunther in the “Ring des Nibelungen”, Kurwenal in “Tristan und Isolde”, Klingsor in “Parsifal” and Orest in “Elektra”, Wolfram in “Tannhaeuser” as well as many concerts and Recital performances.

In 2012 he made his successful debut as Faninal in “Der Rosenkavalier” at the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow. Next season he will sing Wotan in “Rheingold” at Teatro Municipal in Sao Paolo.

Kupfer has worked in productions directed by Willi Decker, Harry Kupfer, Stephan Lawless, Eike Grams, Pierre Audi, Keith Warner, Gustav Kuhn, Georges Delnon, Christian Tombeil, Francois De Carpentries, Ralf Nürnberger and others.

Among the many conductors with whom Kupfer has sung are Gustav Kuhn, Marek Janowski, Ingo Metzmacher, Marcello Viotti, Paul Daniels, Mark Elder, Markus Stenz, Roberto Abbado, Michael Boder, Jac van Steen, Steven Sloane, Andreas Spering.

In the course of his career he has worked with the following Orchestras : Bavarien Stateorchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the “Rundfunkorchester des BR”, the “Tonhalleorchester” Zurich, the “Guerzenich Orchester” Cologne, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the “Festspielorchester der Tiroler Festspiele”, the Haydn Orchester Bozen-Trient, the Stateorchestra “Rheinische Philharmonie”, the “Suedwestdeutschen Philharmonie, the “Capella Coloniensis,” the “Musikkollegium Winterthur” and the “NDR Radio Philharmony Hannover”.

He has made guest appearances at the Royal Albert Hall London, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the De Doelen in Rotterdam, the Philharmonie “Gasteig” München, the Tonhalle Zürich, the Bayerischen Staatsoper München, the Teaotro Comunale Bologna, and the Opera Houses of Saarbrücken, Karlsruhe, Hannover, Schwerin, Essen, Weimar, Chemnitz, Pforzheim and Dortmund. He has sung as a guest artist at the following Festivals : The Proms ‘97 (London), Tiroler Festspiele, Opernfestspiele München, Beijing Music Festival, Suedtirol Festival Alto Adige, Kissinger Sommer, Europäische Wochen Passau, Gustav Mahler Tage Toblach, Musica Sacra (Pisa), Brühler Schlosskonzerte, Festival International Santander, and Musica Mallorca.

Michael Kupfer is a member of the Accademia di Montegral under the artistic management of Maestro Gustav Kuhn.
