
Biography
Studied at Zagreb and the Sweelinck Conservatoire in Amsterdam.
In 1997 he won the Netherland’s National Competition for Young Singers, in 1999 — the Vriendenkrans Competition (Amsterdam).
His international breakthrough came at the 2000 Aix-en-Provence Festival as Ulisse in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, the role he repeated in Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, Grand Theatre de Geneve and Frankfurt Opera.
Since then he regularly appears in major opera houses and festivals: Baroque Festival Beaune (Oronte in Handel’s Alcina), Paris National Opera (Lurcanio in Handel’s Ariodante), Los Angeles Opera (Testo in Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor), Baden-Baden Festspiele (Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas), Salzburger Festspiele (Da-Ud in R. Strauss’ Die agyptische Helena and Alessandro in Mozart’s Il re pastore ), Schwetzingen Festival (Mentore/Nettuno/Ombra in Scarlatti’s Telemaco).
He sang the title role in Monteverdi’s Orfeo in Zagreb, Tito in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito at the Nederlands Opera, in Aix-en-Provence, Baden-Baden, and Luxembourg, Idomeneo in Toronto, Tempo in Handel’s Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno at the Zurich Opera and also in Dortmund and Granada, Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol and the title role in Oedipus Rex at Opera National du Rhin. His concert appearances have included Mahler’s Das klagende Lied, Haydn’s Requiem in C minor, Bach’s Messe in H minor, Mozart’s Requiem, Bruckner’s Messe in F minor and Janacek’s Vecne evangelium.
In 2010, he made his Bolshoi Theatre debut as Gabriel von Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus).
