As the curtain descends on 2009, the Paris National Opera is to pay tribute at the Palais Garnier to Sergei Diaghilev’s ballet Saisons Russes, whose centenary has been celebrated this year throughout the world. From 12 up to and including 3l December there will be 12 performances of a Gala Evening with a concert programme which will include the hallmark ballets of the Diaghilev enterprise.
The 16 December Gala, called Hommage aux Ballets Russes, is a special occasion: on this evening, Opera de Paris Ballet Company etoiles will ’keep company’ with Bolshoi Ballet stars.

The Bolshoi Theatre is celebrating the jubilee of one of the greatest opera divas of the 2^nd half of the 20^th century — Yelena Obraztsova.

The second concert in the Bolshoi Theatre season ticket cycle at the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire will be the joint performance of the Theatre’s Orchestra and Chorus with Vassily Sinaisky, one of the new Bolshoi conductors in residence.

The Association of German Record Critics honors the DVD recording of the Bolshoi Theatre Eugene Onegin with the "German Record Critics' Award" as a Recording of Exceptional Artistry and selects it as one of the "Quarterly Best" of New Releases for the Fourth Quarter 2009.

Maria Alexandrova’s Moscow debut as Nikia on 9 October, will be followed on 10 October by Ruslan Skvortsov’s debut as Solor, while on 11 October, it will be Natalia Osipova’s and Ivan Vasiliev’s turn to make their lst appearance in these two roles in La Bayadere at the Bolshoi.

The first Bolshoi Theatre subscription concert at the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire once again brings together the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra (and chorus) and Maestro Alexander Lazarev.

At a Samsung Electronics press conference, heldin the atrium of the Bolshoi Theatre Auxiliary Wing, it was announced that to mark the Company's 18^th anniversary of partnership with the Bolshoi which falls this year, Samsung had been promoted to official Bolshoi Theatre sponsor. This rise in its sponsorship status is of course due to Samsung Electronics' active participation in the life of the Theatre. One of the Company's most notable sponsorship projects in recentyears, has been the technical renovation of the Bolshoi Theatre Music Library and naturally this project was at the centre of attention at the press conference.

Audemars Piguet, the famous Swiss watch manufacturer and jeweler are to join the ranks of Bolshoi Theatre sponsors.

It was all go at the opening of the Bolshoi’s 234^th season: never before had the press conference on the Theatre’s future plans (traditionally attracting a maximum number of journalists), the Company Assembly and the first performance of the new season, all taken place on the same day. And if one bears in mind that at the press conference the Theatre’s new music director was presented and plans were revealed not just for the forthcoming season, but also for the two following seasons there can be no doubt that in the field of ballet, opera and music the Bolshoi today has become a major newsmaker.

The Bolshoi Theatre Ballet Company is to give two performances of Le Corsaire at the Lithuanian National Opera, Vilnius.

The New National Theatre Ballet Company (otherwise known as NNTB), part of Japan’s New National Theatre Tokyo (NNTT) performing arts center — see below, is setting off on the 2^nd foreign tour in its history. In Japan, the Russian school of classical ballet is greatly revered and one of the main bearers of its traditions is, of course, the Bolshoi Ballet. And the fact it is the Bolshoi Theatre who will be playing host to New National Theatre Ballet causes the Japanese dancers to prepare for the tour with particular care, all the more so as appearing with them will be Svetlana Zakharova — Bolshoi Theatre prima ballerina and, at the same time, NNTB principal guest artist.

After a 10-year interval, the Bolshoi is once again to tour in Spain.

From 2009/10 season onwards the Bolshoi Theatre will work on a regular basis with five outstanding conductors who represent the best of the Russian conducting school: Alexander Lazarev, Vassily Sinaisky, Vladimir Jurowski, Kirill Petrenko and Teodor Currentzis.

After a twenty-year interval, the Bolshoi Opera Company is once again to appear at Milan’s La Scala, where it is to present perhaps the most popular of all Russian operas ЁC Eugene Onegin in a production by Dmitri Tcherniakov, a director who is already well-known in the West, including in Italy (Tcherniakov’s recent production of Prokofiev’s The Gambler at La Scala won the Franco Abbiati prize, Italy’s most prestigious musical award, established by the Italian Association of Music Critics)..

Two productions will be presented: The Queen of Spades (director Valery Fokin, music director and conductor Mikhail Pletnyov) and Eugene Onegin (director Dmitri Tcherniakov, music director and conductor Alexander Vedernikov).

Yekaterina Shcherbachenko, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2009 competition which has just ended in Wales, garnered the prize for her exceptional combination of fine voice, scenic and feminine charm, elegance, taste, sense of style both in singing and stage presence on the concert platform.
